The 165ft / 50m classic motor yacht Malahne was re-launched on March 14th at Pendennis Shipyard, Falmouth, after a substantial 30 month restoration, during which time the project details have been shrouded in secrecy. Designed by Charles E Nicholson and built by Camper & Nicholsons in 1937, Malahne is one of a very small number of pre-war motor yachts to have survived until the 21st Century. Having now undergone one of the most ambitious restorations of all time, her original elegance has been reinstated, whilst being modernised to be fully classed by Lloyd’s Register complying with the MCA Large Yacht Code (LY3).

Scottish Minister calls on UK Government to extend funding for emergency towing vehicles

Scottish Minister, Richard Lochhead, calls for funding for emergency towing vehicles to be extended

The provision for Emergency Towing Vehicles should be reviewed immediately and extended beyond March 2016, Richard Lochhead said during the recent national marine plan debate.

This call comes as a result of the recent sinking of the Cemfjord and the grounding of a large cargo ship Lysblink Seaways at Ardnamurchan Point.

The UK Government must reassure maritime industries that emergency tug provision is available across Scotland’s waters including the Western Isles and the west coast of Scotland. Marine industries bring approximately £18 billion into the Scottish economy and there must be adequate provision to protect these interests and the marine environment itself. The Scottish Government is committed to ensuring that the development of Scotland’s seas stay within environmental limits, which is why we have developed this plan. The plan outlines the Government’s vision for the sustainable development and use of the marine environment. It provides clarity and flexibility to developers and decision makers on Scotland’s priorities for sustainable use of the sea.

UK shipping fleet contracts

The UK shipping fleet contracted to its lowest level in 2014 since 2006

Shipping is a complex international business and many different parties, often based in different countries, may have a commercial interest in a single vessel.

The chart in the full document illustrates four of many ways that the UK shipping fleet might be presented, in each case looking at the deadweight tonnage (dwt – a measure of cargo carrying capacity) of the vessels concerned.

By all four measures – registered, direct owned, parent owned and managed – the UK shipping fleet experienced substantial growth between the late 1990s and 2008/09, when the industry started to feel the impact of the global recession.

The MAIB has published its report and findings on the investigation of the two fatalities due to carbon monoxide poisoning on board the Bayliner 285 named Arniston on Lake Windermere on 1 April 2013.

This tragic case, which could have easily been avoided, involved a mother and her daughter who were overcome by fumes from a portable generator, which had been installed in the engine bay. It had been modified by the addition of an exhaust which subsequently failed allowing the small sleeping area to fill with lethal carbon monoxide.

Words by Capt. John Noble

The rather dramatic grounding of the large car carrier Hoegh Osaka on the 3rd January raised the spectacle of first, how did it happen and second, how would it be removed.

As I write this article the salvors, Svitzer, have successfully brought the ship into Southampton.

The ship sailed from Southampton at about 2020 hours on the 3rd January. It has been reported that soon after leaving the berth she developed an alarming list. The Master and pilot became extremely concerned and just after passing the notorious Bramble Bank located between the mouth of Southampton water and Cowes on the Isle of Wight a Continue reading “Thoughts on the salvage operation of Hoegh Osaka”

Continuing saga of the Hoegh Osaka

The stricken Hoegh Osaka that has provided an extraordinary spectacle for people living on the UK south coast could soon be on the move back to port
The stricken Hoegh Osaka that has provided an extraordinary spectacle for people living on the UK south coast could soon be on the move back to port

The car transporter ship, Hoegh Osaka, was deliberately grounded following the decision made by the Captain and Pilot on Bramble Bank in the Solent early in January after it began to list heavily. The ship was only 50 minutes into its voyage from the port of Southampton and was carrying a full load of Landrover Jaguar cars and heavy duty construction equipment. It is felt that the quick thinking and decision making, taken to protect the lives of the 25 crew on bard, was courageous and correct.

At that time, the Hoegh Osaka was listing at more than 50 degrees and a salvage operation is expected to take several days. She became an instant tourist attraction for not only locals on the south coats, but also further afield. Such a sight as this is rarely seen.

Work begins on £25M quay extension at Port of Tyne

The Port of Tyne has confirmed Southbay Civil Engineering Ltd as the main contractor for the £25m extension of Riverside Quay
The Port of Tyne has confirmed Southbay Civil Engineering Ltd as the main contractor for the £25m extension of Riverside Quay

The Port of Tyne has appointed the main contractor for the £25m extension of Riverside Quay, the Port’s multifunctional deep-sea facility at South Shields.

The main contract for over 300 metres of quay work includes a 125 metre quay extension, an upgrade of 118m of existing quay and 90m of quay wall renewal at the former McNulty site. The £18.6m contract was won by Tyneside-based Southbay Civil Engineering Ltd who will start construction this month.

This development is required to support the growth in cargo volumes being handled by the Port of Tyne, including the relatively new wood pellet imports used by power stations as they convert from coal to renewable fuels.
