MAIB stands for the Marine Accident Investigation Branch and it is an operationally independent unit of the Department for Transport. The MAIB contributes to improving marine safety by determining the causes and circumstances of marine accidents, and working with others to reduce the likelihood of such accidents recurring in the future. The MAIB Business Plan covers the financial year 2015-16.

The MAIB was formed in 1989 following recommendations made as a consequence of the Herald of Free Enterprise disaster of 1987, when it was recognised that the UK needed to separate the roles of accident investigation from those of regulation and enforcement.

IIMS Certifying Authority training day looked at how to conduct inclining experiments and heel tests

On 13 May, a group of 20 IIMS members and non members, including IIMS MCA coding and non coding surveyors, gathered at Trafalgar Wharf, Portchester on a beautifully sunny day for one of the two annual training days that are provided by the Certifying Authority.

The theme of this Certifying Authority training day was stability, stability, stablity. The first class training, which was provided by IIMS CA Committee members, Fraser Noble (Chairman) and John Excell, included an inclining experiment followed by a heel test on a small fishing vessel and finally a heel test on a RIB.

The three exercises were filmed and the IIMS will soon be issuing these videos to members via its YouTube channel for all to see and learn from as a training aid.

Thanks go to all those who attended and helped to make the day both interesting and enjoyable.

The approach to the design of all-weather RNLI lifeboats is set for a re-evaluation as part of a major study being led by Newcastle University and the RNLI with support from Lloyds’ Register. Set up to explore how new technology, materials and approaches can be used to improve the design, operation and maintenance practice of the RNLI’s Severn Class lifeboat, the four-year project will help to improve the performance of the craft while providing the safest possible environment for the RNLI’s volunteer crews.

Using computer models, small scale experiments and full size trials to analyse the behaviour of lifeboats at a range of speeds and in varying conditions, the findings will inform new design specifications around speed, safety and efficiency.

It has been reported that Camper & Nicholsons Marinas has signed an agreement with its landside partner, Westcourt Real Estate (WREE) and the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) to permit the £50 development of Victoria Quay in Cowes, Isle of Wight. The plan allows for a landside and seaside development, which will include a new 400 berth marina at East Cowes on the Isle of Wight, UK.

The agreement is subject to the satisfaction of certain conditions including funding, planning and building. The Watersports Participation Survey shows that UK boat ownership is on the increase

According to new research released through the Watersports Participation Survey in March, 3.5m UK adults participated in one or more of 12 boating activities in 2014. This remains at a similar level to 2013 at 7.1% of the total adult population in the UK.

Participation in any watersports activity in addition to the 12 core boating activities stands at 13.1m (26.8% of UK adults). This is a slight decline of 2% points (compared to 28.8% in 2013), however this still remains higher than in 2011 and 2012.

The Watersports Participation Survey is conducted annually by a consortium of leading marine bodies including British Marine Federation (BMF), RYA (Royal Yachting Association), Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), British Canoeing (BC) and Marine Management Organisation (MMO).

Nearly 30 marine surveyors were joined by IIMS head office staff at the SCWG training day, which was held at Portchester Sailing Club

A group of nearly 30 small craft surveyors (the majority members of IIMS) met at Portchester Sailing Club on Monday 23 March for the first Small Craft Working Group training day of the year.

The agenda for this event looked rather different to previous ones and this was perhaps reflected by the numbers who turned up, in what was the largest such gathering for some considerable time.

The aim of the day was to mix some presentations about business management skills with more specific surveyor training and, judging from the feedback received at the end of the day, the format worked for the vast majority of delegates.
