The UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has chosen Oceans HQ to provide a new digital vessel registration system. This is a major part of the MCA’s 2016-2017 business plan and should improve the way the flag administration provides a range of services.

Oceans HQ’s Vessel HQ software is already in operation with a number of other flag states. It is a software platform that maritime administrations use for managing the registry of ships and meeting their international obligations to the IMO. Oceans HQ partnered with Thoughtbot London to deliver the modern software solution to the MCA.

British Marine and its group association, Superyacht UK (SYUK), gave 17 international delegates and journalists the opportunity to visit and network with a number of key British companies who provide superior quality products and services for the superyacht sector.

The Superyacht UK Tour of Excellence, which took place over an entire week, ran from Monday 18 to Friday 22 April. During the course of the week the tour took delegates from Cornwall in the west to Sussex in the south. Tritex NDT has announced the launch of the new Multigauge 5650 surveyor thickness gauge specially for marine surveyors

Dorchester based, Tritex NDT has launched their new Multigauge 5650 Surveyor thickness gauge. The new gauge, based on the already very popular original Multigauge 5600, has new features specifically designed for marine surveyors. The gauge can be used with existing standard soft faced probes for measuring metal thickness through coatings, up to 20mm thick, to give the same high standard of performance as the Multigauge 5600. However, by simply exchanging the probe, the gauge automatically switches to GRP measurement mode which uses single echo. UK MCA issues Marine Guidance Notes MGN 547 and MGN 552

The UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) has issued two new marine guidance notices on MGN 547 and MGN 552 in recent days.

MGN 547: Solid bulk cargoes – safe carriage of bauxite.
The purpose of this Marine Guidance Note is to advise the industry of the circular issued by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Sub-Committee on Carriage of Cargoes and Containers, CCC.1/Circ.2, on safe carriage of bauxite and raise awareness of the possible dangers of liquefaction associated with carriage of bauxite.

The superyacht industry is experiencing solid growth according to a recent survey

According to the recently released Superyacht UK survey, the superyacht industry grew by more than 10% to £542 million in 2014/15 writes Katy Stickland from Yacht & Boating World. Out of those surveyed, 48% reported an increase in profits. There was also a 6.9% increase in jobs.

Speaking at the launch of the report, the Head of International Development at British Marine, Richard Selby said: “Despite the challenging environment, these figures show that the UK’s marine industry is heading in the right direction. Small Craft Surveyors Forum announces its Seawork seminar schedule

The Small Craft Surveyors Forum, member organisations of which are RINA, IMarEST, IIMS, SCMS, NI, YDSA, has announced plans for its annual seminar taking place at the Seawork show on Wednesday 15 June.

Seawork has a new location in Mayflower Park, Southampton and the seminar will be held onboard the Ocean Scene, which is moored inside the confines of the event itself.

Sunseeker announces it will use the vacuum bagging technique on its yachts

Sunseeker International is to join the other big boatbuilders and start using PRO-SET epoxy and vacuum bagging techniques on its yacht decks.

It made the decision following a new case study by West System International (WSI), which revealed that the technique would provide optimal finish across all of its yacht decks.

The luxury yacht builder will now use PRO-SET ADV-170 Adhesive and vacuum bagging as standard for pre-fabricated teak deck installation across some 200 boats a year.

If Britain votes to leave the European Union, the country’s shipping sector faces years of disruption as trade agreements get reworked and currency volatility leads to higher costs at a time when the industry is battling its worst global downturn.

Shipping sector contributes some 10 billion pounds annually to the UK economy and directly employs 240,000 people in multiple areas including maritime services such as ports, transportation, as well as ship broking and marine insurance.
