The iconic Old Library at Lloyds will play host to the IIMS London Conference in September 2015

IIMS has secured the Old Library in the Lloyds of London building for the IIMS London Conference on 7-8 September. The meeting will be held in the historic splendour of what must surely rank as one of the city’s most spectacular and famous venues in the ‘Square Mile’.

The Old Library was built in 1928 and is one of the few libraries in London not to contain any books! The modern Lloyds building at 1 Lime Street was designed by architect Richard Rogers and built between 1978 and 1986. It incorporates the Old Library in to the more recent structure. Lloyds stands out as one of the most unique landmarks on the London skyline. But the Old Library elegantly complements the traditional with the modern architecture. This historic space is oak panelled with impressive hand-carvings of 17th and 18th century sailing vessels and has a gallery providing additional seating.

Adam Brancher, IIMS Australia Branch Chair and VP IIMS, writes:

“We have had lots of feedback on preferred events and formats. We’ve decided to push back from February to a time when many are less busy.

In general it’s clear that people want to get their hands dirty and learn or revise critical skills. To this end we have decided to hold an IIMS Australia branch technical workshop and Branch AGM at the Australian Fisheries and Maritime Academy in Port Adelaide, South Australia on 18/19 June 2015. We are looking at a 10.00 am start on the Thursday and an early afternoon finish on the Friday with an informal dinner on Thursday night locally – to allow easy travel to and from, or indeed for people to take advantage of a long weekend in the Barossa, Clare Valley or any of the other fantastic areas close to Adelaide.

A new international qualification aimed at raising the professional standards and supporting the professional development of tall ship sailors has been launched by The Nautical Institute and Sail Training International.

The International Sail Endorsement Scheme is the result of two years work by experts from Sail Training International (STI) and The Nautical Institute (NI). It was launched at STI’s annual meeting in A Coruña, Spain.

“The aim of the International Sail Endorsement Scheme is to establish, promote and recognise a high standard of knowledge, understanding and proficiency among those who sail tall ships,” said Steven Gosling, Training and Quality Manager at the Institute. “The scheme marks the creation of the first international proficiency standard against which square rig and fore-and-aft sailors can be independently assessed and endorsed.”
