Oceanco launches 90 metre superyacht Project Shark

Dutch shipyard Oceanco has delivered its 90-metre (295-foot) motoryacht Project Shark making her one of the 100 largest superyachts in the world.

Previously known as Y717, she has been described by the shipyard as being “unlike any other superyacht afloat today”.

Exterior styling comes courtesy of DeBasto Design, with interiors by Nuvolari Lenard. She reflects the latest advances in glass technology and is the first yacht in the Netherlands to be given the official Lloyd’s Register Integrated Bridge System (IBS) notation and designation.

NDT increasingly used to detect cracks in large masts in a changing insurance environment

Already well known in the market for rig management and survey projects on the world’s largest and most advanced sailing yachts, Marine Results is now using non-destructive testing to detect cracks and flaws in masts.

This testing uses non-invasive ultra-sonic screening with the company supporting the Grand Prix circuit, Americas Cup, GC32, TP52s and Open 60s.

“We frequently work as part of a larger team with other suppliers on major rig projects,” explained director Jon Morris.

“The data that we produce from the megayachts in collaboration with our regular partners trickles right down to the mass market enabling design standards to advance across the industry.”

Contracts signed for biggest ever superyacht with green credentials

Deltamarin and Norwegian Yacht Voyages’ new project will operate globally and be capable of accommodating up to 220 people across 110 suites (from 55 square metres) and penthouses (of 160 square metres).

Norwegian Yacht Voyages states that she will also be the world’s “first true hybrid expedition mega yacht” and that she’ll boast a LOA of 187.5 metres (615 feet). Azzam, currently the largest superyacht in the world, stretches to 180 metres (590 feet).

Deltamarin will be providing its services with carefully chosen architectural partners, working on the technical aspects and documentation of the development.

In a live demonstration of the self-docking system, which can be seen in the video below, a 20.7-metre (68-foot) motor yacht fitted with the technology was able to automatically and safely dock in a compact space between other vessels.

The self-docking system is centred around a joystick-controlled Volvo Penta Inboard Performance System (IPS), which is a comprehensive integrated propulsion system. The automated docking procedures are viable thanks to the on-board electronic vessel control system (EVC), which calculates steering power, speeds and the boat’s exact location. It also interacts with four sensors positioned in the berth for maximum accuracy.

As well as being able to safely secure a boat into a berthing space, the automated system can also help it depart with ease.

Feadship’s Project 1007 has been launched at the yard’s Makkum facility – at 110 metres (360 foot), it is the Dutch company’s largest ever superyacht. In addition, once delivered she will join Jubilee as the joint-largest yacht ever to be built in the Netherlands.

Interior styling is from Michael Leach Design in partnership with the owner’s personal New York decorator Brian McCarthy Inc., while De Voogt is responsible for the in-house naval architecture.

Green light to adopt Methanol given as a sustainable marine fuel

The Methanol Institute has welcomed the findings of the Sustainable Marine Methanol (SUMMETH) project, which has backed the increased use of Methanol as a marine fuel.

The research concluded that there are no obstacles to the efficient use of Methanol in a converted diesel engine and that smaller vessel conversion projects are feasible and cost-effective, with levels of safety that easily meet existing requirements.

Switching to Methanol would offer immediate environmental benefits, including close to zero SOx and particulate matter emissions and significantly lower NOx emissions compared to conventional marine fuels or biodiesel.

British Marine issues statement following cancellation of 2019 London Boat Show

British Marine, which organises and owns the London Boat Show, has announced that the 2019 Show, due to run at ExCeL London from 9-13 January 2019, will not take place.

British Marine, which organises and owns the London Boat Show, has announced that the 2019 Show, due to run at ExCeL London from 9-13 January 2019, will not take place.

This decision was made after independent research by exhibition experts, Zing Insights, showed there was insufficient support from a large proportion of the marine industry to the London Boat Show with its current format, duration and location.

In the last three weeks, Zing Insights has carried out personal interviews with over 67% of exhibitors. This revealed that whilst a number of marine companies supported the change to a five day Show, finding it preferable to a 10 day Show, a large number of key exhibitors were not prepared to commit to exhibiting to a five day Show at ExCeL in January 2019.

Denmark cancels registration fee for Danish Register in attempt to boost fleet size

The Danish Parliament adopted a legislative amendment on 26 of April, which cancels the registration fee for vessels in the Danish Registers of Shipping. The aim of this amendment is to increase the attractiveness of the Danish Flag.

Denmark supports that this measure will indeed increase the attractiveness of the Danish Flag, as it now offers the same benefits as foreign Flags.

This amendment also provides increased economic activity and international influence, when the Danish Flag attracts more vessels from both national as foreign shipowners.

The annual IIMS Western Mediterranean Large Yacht & Small Craft Working Group training event took place in Palma on 26-27 April and attracted 18 surveyors, proving to be a great success. As well as local Mallorca based IIMS members, others had travelled from Portugal, Ireland, mainland Spain and France to take part in the event.

Futuristic 110 metre superyacht concept Elyon by Expleo set to break the superyacht mould

Expleo Design has unveiled a futuristic 110-metre (360-foot) superyacht concept named Elyon, with on-board accommodation for up to 30 guests.

According to Expleo Design, the organic shapes of the yacht “combine elements inspired by nature [and] assembled in a futuristic and innovative approach”. The studio’s main inspiration was a calm ocean wave, which explains its curvaceous exterior lines, which are described as being calm and elegant, yet firm and strong at the same time.

Elyon’s unique bow; the blending between decks; wide-glass windows; and her structural elements are combined with clean design and wide-open spaces to give the feeling of space, freedom and power.

The vision confirms IMO’s commitment to reducing GHG emissions from international shipping and, as a matter of urgency, to phasing them out as soon as possible.
