The victorious winners of the World Superyacht Awards 2015 were announced on 9 May at the 10th edition of the event in Amsterdam. The host city, with its rich maritime history, provided a fitting backdrop as a distinguished audience of superyacht owners and industry specialists took their seats at the Westergasfabriek.
The World Superyacht Awards ceremony, which celebrates excellence in superyacht build and design, is the most anticipated event in the superyacht calendar.
CRN, the shipyard based in Ancona specialising in the construction of steel and aluminium pleasure vessels between 50 and 90 metres in length, has held a private ceremony to launch its hull No 134 – a 55-metre megayacht named Atlante that stands out for her very strong, unmistakable personality.
This yacht is the outcome of the outstanding job performed by design firm Nuvolari Lenard, that pencilled her outer lines, and CRN’s Engineering Department, which was in charge of naval engineering.
A group of IIMS members and non members assembled for what turned out to be a full on day at the IIMS Western Mediterranean Small Craft Working Group training day, held at the Palma superyacht show in Majorca. The event was made even more agreeable due to the splendid, early season, warm and sunny weather.
The day began with a couple of presentations by IIMS CEO, Mike Schwarz, given in an outdoor location within the show itself before the event opened. This attracted an audience approaching 40 people, which apart from member surveyors, also included representatives from local insurance companies, refit yards and yacht brokers. Mike spoke about the activities of the institute, operating in three core markets as a membership organisation, an educator and a certifying authority. He also explained the benefits of membership and talked about the values of engaging an IIMS member surveyor. After a short break, Mike concluded by speaking about the growing work of the Marine Surveying Academy in the area of accreditation for other marine and industry organisations.

Named after the mystical warhorse of Tang Dynasty Emperor Taizong that, according to legend, despite being wounded in battle by an arrow amidst fierce fighting, the valiant super-powered horse unflinchingly delivered the Emperor back to safety. The 42 metre displacement motoryacht Alive, recently delivered by Heesen Yachts in the Netherlands, is the first luxury yacht equipped with a Hull Vane. After a 30m passenger catamaran and a 55m offshore supply vessel, MY Alive represents the third full scale application of the fuel saving device called Hull Vane. Full scale test results have proven fuel savings averaging 20% in the yacht’s useful speed range (12-16 knots).
Even without Hull Vane, the hull shape of MY Alive is very fuel efficient, as it is base d on the Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF) from Van Oossanen Naval Architects, the company where the Hull Vane was originally invented. Model tests at the Wolfson Unit showed unprecedented fuel economy for a yacht of these dimensions – and this was later confirmed at sea.
The 165ft / 50m classic motor yacht Malahne was re-launched on March 14th at Pendennis Shipyard, Falmouth, after a substantial 30 month restoration, during which time the project details have been shrouded in secrecy. Designed by Charles E Nicholson and built by Camper & Nicholsons in 1937, Malahne is one of a very small number of pre-war motor yachts to have survived until the 21st Century. Having now undergone one of the most ambitious restorations of all time, her original elegance has been reinstated, whilst being modernised to be fully classed by Lloyd’s Register complying with the MCA Large Yacht Code (LY3).

The European Committee for Professional Yachting (ECPY) has likened the proposed tax on yachts in French waters to what happened in Sardinia between 2006 and 2009. According to ECPY, this legislation, if passed, would have a profound and potentially catastrophic effect.
In January, the French Senate introduced a bill to tax yachts that were cruising in any of the 322 French managed marine areas, representing almost a quarter of the country’s territorial waters. But the bill was kicked out by the National Assembly as they realised the damaging effect it could have on what is a lucrative industry and popular leisure pastime.

The 2015 edition of Superyacht Management Meeting: Fiscal has been confirmed. The event, to be held on 28 April in Monaco, will provide a platform for attendees to devise a strategy for the effective lobbying of the European Commission, on the subject of fiscal harmonisation and superyacht specific legislation. This project is groundbreaking in its ambition, and in a new era of prudent management, is something that top industry professionals should be a part of.
The agenda of the Superyacht Management Meeting is rooted in the hugely successful Fiscal workshop at the Global Superyacht Forum in 2014. The workshop, led by Stephen Coleclough, culminated in a standing ovation after his declaration that fiscal harmonisation for Europe is a realistic goal, and one that the superyacht community should work together to attain.
