The Singapore Yacht Show takes place from 23-26 April, with an incredible line-up of the most luxurious superyachts, boats, international lifestyle brands and superyacht industry leaders.

Organisers have just announced that the 69-metre Australian-built M/Y Saluzi, the largest permanently based yacht available for charter in Asia, will be on display at the Show. Recently refitted, the former luxury cruise ship, is the product of remarkable engineering and vision, designed to offer a truly unique floating vacation home for exploring Asian waters.

Named after the mystical warhorse of Tang Dynasty Emperor Taizong that, according to legend, despite being wounded in battle by an arrow amidst fierce fighting, the valiant super-powered horse unflinchingly delivered the Emperor back to safety. The artwork of ? the horse on the exterior of the yacht has been specially created by the artist, Li Jiwei as a modern interpretation of the ancient tale and in his own words Saluzi is “an expression of both East and West, a blending of spirituality and materiality.”

The Watersports Participation Survey shows that UK boat ownership is on the increase

According to new research released through the Watersports Participation Survey in March, 3.5m UK adults participated in one or more of 12 boating activities in 2014. This remains at a similar level to 2013 at 7.1% of the total adult population in the UK.

Participation in any watersports activity in addition to the 12 core boating activities stands at 13.1m (26.8% of UK adults). This is a slight decline of 2% points (compared to 28.8% in 2013), however this still remains higher than in 2011 and 2012.

The Watersports Participation Survey is conducted annually by a consortium of leading marine bodies including British Marine Federation (BMF), RYA (Royal Yachting Association), Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), British Canoeing (BC) and Marine Management Organisation (MMO).

Nearly 30 marine surveyors were joined by IIMS head office staff at the SCWG training day, which was held at Portchester Sailing Club

A group of nearly 30 small craft surveyors (the majority members of IIMS) met at Portchester Sailing Club on Monday 23 March for the first Small Craft Working Group training day of the year.

The agenda for this event looked rather different to previous ones and this was perhaps reflected by the numbers who turned up, in what was the largest such gathering for some considerable time.

The aim of the day was to mix some presentations about business management skills with more specific surveyor training and, judging from the feedback received at the end of the day, the format worked for the vast majority of delegates.

Designed by Charles E Nicholson and built by Camper & Nicholsons in 1937, Malahne is one of a very small number of pre-war motor yachts to have survived until the 21st Century. Having now undergone one of the most ambitious restorations of all time, her original elegance has been reinstated, whilst being modernised to be fully classed by Lloyd’s Register complying with the MCA Large Yacht Code (LY3).

Proposed French yacht tax labelled a disaster by ECPY

ECPY calls on the French government to reject the proposed new yacht tax in French waters
ECPY calls on the French government to reject the proposed new yacht tax in French waters

The European Committee for Professional Yachting (ECPY) has likened the proposed tax on yachts in French waters to what happened in Sardinia between 2006 and 2009. According to ECPY, this legislation, if passed, would have a profound and potentially catastrophic effect.

In January, the French Senate introduced a bill to tax yachts that were cruising in any of the 322 French managed marine areas, representing almost a quarter of the country’s territorial waters. But the bill was kicked out by the National Assembly as they realised the damaging effect it could have on what is a lucrative industry and popular leisure pastime.
