MCA small commercial vessel code of practice – yellow and blue codes first draft review underway

The British Marine Technical team, working with the RYA, has completed the first drafting of the review of the SCV technical specifications as laid down in MGN 280, the Code of Practice for the construction, machinery, stability, operation, manning and examination of small commercial vessels less than 24m load line length that carry 12 or fewer passengers.

This draft can be found on the British Marine website for those companies or individuals who wish to read through and provide feedback on the proposed text. The cut-off date for comments is 5 October 2015. All comments will be compiled and a Working Group of interested parties will then be asked to take part in a one or two day meetings at Marine House at the end of October, prior to the first draft being submitted to the MCA for discussion.

There has been a steady increase in interest from IIMS members wishing to undertake tonnage surveys. If this is an area of business you with to operate in, please read this to understand who may and who may not undertake such work.

The IIMS’ authority to undertake tonnage surveys on vessels up to 24 metres and only up to 24 metres is through the Certifying Authority contract with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). The Institute is required to demonstrate to the MCA how it authorises and controls tonnage surveys. To do this we have created a category of ‘tonnage only’ Certifying Authority surveyor, not authorised to do MCA coding work, but ok’d for tonnage.

UK leisure boat production on the rise

iims palma 50British Marine is pleased to announce a 4.3% increase in the production of UK leisure boats in 2014. This is in spite of challenging trading conditions in the Eurozone and other key foreign markets showing that both at home and away, British build is still in high demand.

The figures come from new research by British Marine, in collaboration with Phil Draper & Associates, reporting that UK manufacturers built 10,120 boats in 2014.

Clipper round the world fleet prepares for departure

The start of the Clipper 2015-16 Round the World Yacht Race is nearing. The yachts leave on Sunday 30 August at 13.00 hrs from St Katherine Docks on the River Thames, London.

The start of the tenth edition of the world’s longest ocean race for amateur sailors, the brain child of Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, will be marked by the full Gosport based fleet passing through Tower Bridge in a colourful parade down the Thames accompanied by a flotilla of spectator boats.

The Ferretti Group has announced the launch of their latest addition to the Custom Line series: the very first 108.

Launched at the Ferretti shipyard facility in La Spezia, Italy a few days ago, the yard will spend the next few days completing the interior outfitting of the yacht and testing her engineering systems on the water. Once these tests are completed, the yacht will be delivered to her new owner in a private ceremony.

Started in autumn 2013, the EU funded Boat DIGEST project on boat dismantling and recycling is set to finish after summer this year.

The outcomes and findings of this initiative will be presented during the final conference on Wednesday, 23 September from 10:00 to 14:00 in Brussels (Belgium) at Rue de La Loi 227 (ground floor at Catalan Region premises).

Representatives of the European Union, industry, Member States, NGOs, dismantling companies and journalists are invited to the event, which is free of charge and open to everyone with an interest in boat dismantling.

The three day conference running alongside Seawork 2015 provided a range of panel discussions including ‘Windfarm access vessels: are Catamarans the right solution?’

The panel discussion, located on board ‘Ocean Scene’ which was moored alongside the quay, delivered a lively debate that was relevant regarding hull designs for all professional sectors. Panellists looked at the latest cat designs and presented the merits of hull forms ranging from Very Slender Vessels (VSVs) to Foil Assisted Multihulls. The discussion addressed the pros and cons of multihull versus monohull boats for the purposes of getting personnel out to offshore wind farms, either directly or using the mothership / daughter craft approach.

The first announcement came as Ocean Village’s proposed superyacht marina project and 102 waterside apartments was granted outline planning permission by the Development and Planning Commission. This decision represents a landmark victory for Ocean Village who have been strongly advocating the need for expansion in the marina’s current superyacht facilities due to the fast growing number of superyachts calling at Gibraltar.

As British Marine unveils a strong new identity, National Boat Shows (NBS) has also re-branded to become British Marine Boat Shows. This aligns it with the new British Marine brand.

The British Marine Boat Shows’ portfolio contains two world-leading events: the Southampton Boat Show, which this year takes place 11-20 September, and the London Boat Show, taking place at ExCeL, 8-17 January 2016. The new look is the result of a year-long re-brand exercise which has been undertaken in-house.

Denmark’s Tuco Marine Group has disclosed the newest vessel in its ProZero series of fast rescue boats, daughter craft and workboats: the 10m-long windfarms service boat.

The new windfarms service boat has been designed for wind parks that are far from shore A dedicated service boat and crew transfer vessel for offshore wind farms, the boat has been developed in close collaboration with experts in wind farm services to meet the latest requirements.

It is constructed to be lifted on and off larger mother vessels using a single-point davit system. It can also be outfitted with hook systems chosen by the owner.

DYT Yacht Transport schedules its largest yacht carrier for trip to South Pacific

New policies making it easier for foreign flagged vessels to explore the coastlines of Australia have inspired DYT Yacht Transport to schedule its largest semi-submersible yacht carrier, the 686-foot (209-metre) Yacht Express, to deliver yachts to the South Pacific. The trip coordinates with the end of the Mediterranean charter season, starting in Genoa (Italy) in November to accommodate private luxury yachts and charter vessels departing from the Mediterranean Sea. Operating with its unique float-on/float-off method, the ship will make additional port calls in the Caribbean, Florida, Costa Rica, and Tahiti before arriving in Sydney and Auckland by the end of January.
