Gori launches a three blade propeller for sailing boats

Danish propeller manufacturer, Gori, has launched a new three-blade propeller for sailing boats. The new folding propeller is an evolution of the original three-blade version they introduced in 1994 but lacks the ‘overdrive’ function.

The ‘overdrive’ function allowed the helmsman to choose the propeller pitch and profile in the water while sailing forward, by regulating the yacht’s shift and throttle control. It would then operate the same in reverse by first folding closed through the movement before opening again.

This new three-blade propeller has the same features as the standard propeller including the 360o pivot when switching between forward and reverse with the same pitch in either direction for improved stopping.

The all-GRP superyacht features styling by long-term collaborator Officina Italiana Design, including chrome inserts and extensive glazing that surrounds the main deck owner’s cabin and raised pilothouse. A focus on al fresco living is evident throughout the Riva 110 Dolcevita, from the foredeck seating area, complete with spa pool, to the aft sunlounging area on the upper deck.

She has been fitted with Ferretti’s unique submersible transom, which allows for quick tender launches as well as direct access to the sea. The system features a garage door that can fold down to create a bathing platform before lowering into the water when needed.

The inexorable race to develop autonomous ships has taken another step forward with the announcement of an autonomous shipping only joint venture between well known shipping major Wilhelmsen Group and technology company Kongsberg, entitled Massterly.

“Norway has taken a position at the forefront in developing autonomous ships,” said Thomas Wilhelmsen, Wilhelmsen group CEO.

“[Through] Massterly, we take the next step on this journey by establishing infrastructure and services to design and operate vessels, as well as advanced logistics solutions associated with maritime autonomous operations. Massterly will reduce costs at all levels.”

BMT has announced that the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, Australia’s national transport safety investigator, has purchased a licence for its navigation and manoeuvring simulator, Rembrandt.

This follows on from other recent adopters including the UK’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch and the Dutch Safety Board.

Danish Maritime Authority has prepared a report on “the digital twin”. A digital twin presents a ship digitally throughout its lifetime.

Imagine having access to every bit of information on a ship – from engine performance to hull integrity – available at a glance throughout the full lifetime of the vessel?

A digital twin is a ”digital presentation” of a vessel with associated processes and systems, based on continuous data collection. And these processes or systems are presented digitally. Rather than arranging for a physical test cycle, the processes can be followed easily and quickly.

Trimble has announced the MPS865 marine positioning system multi-frequency and multi-application GNSS receiver.

The Trimble MPS865 is a versatile and rugged GNSS positioning and heading solution for a wide variety of real-time and post-processing applications for marine survey.

It features integrated communications options such as Wi-Fi, UHF radio, cellular modem for internet connectivity, Bluetooth and MSS satellite-based correction channels.

The patented GNSS-centric technology uses all available GNSS signals to deliver reliable positions in real time. The GNSS receiver provides for the connection of two GNSS antennas for precise heading.

With a modular form factor, the MPS865 is flexible and can be used as an integrated on-board rover receiver, a base station, or a continuously operating reference station. Wärtsilä has submitted its Aquarius Electro-Chlorination (EC) Ballast Water Management System (BWMS) for US Coast Guard (USCG) Type Approval (TA) after successfully completing all the testing procedures required.

Wärtsilä received type approval from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 2013 for the Electro-Chlorination system and the same successful design was used for the USCG application. This current testing has again proven the consistent performance of the Wärtsilä solution, and demonstrates the high reliability, robustness and effectiveness of the system.

“Achieving this significant USCG testing milestone is a major step forward for the product. It provides customers with further assurance that this system efficiently addresses ballast water treatment compliance needs, with a reliable product and a partner committed to long-term global support,” says Joe Thomas, Director, Ballast Water Management Systems at Wärtsilä.

Dutch yard Oceanco has announced it has delivered its 106-metre (350-foot) sailing yacht Black Pearl, the largest sailing yacht in the world.

She is the result of a successful collaboration between an international group of designers, engineers, naval architects, builders, and project managers, with renowned designers Ken Freivokh Design, Nuvolari Lenard and Villate Design playing a significant role in her evolution.

Dykstra Naval Architects designed the three 70-metre (230-foot) DynaRig carbon masts and sailing system, which can be set or furled by pushing a button, setting the whole sails just in seven minutes.

Fincantieri’s Palermo shipyard is carrying out the world’s first luxury cruise ship lengthening. Lengthening is not unheard of for merchant vessels, but it has never before been attempted for a vessel of this type as far as is known.

On March 10, workers cut the 36,000 tonne Silver Spirit in half with torches and began the process of pulling her bow and stern in opposite directions. Once they had enough space, they used self-propelled modular transporters to move a new, prefabricated 50-foot section into place. DNV GL has announced a joint partnership to study the safe use of lithium-ion batteries in shipping. The class society’s partners in the effort include flag states, research institutions, battery and propulsion suppliers, fire system manufacturers, shipowners, vessel operators and yards. DNV GL says that the hope is to identify improvements not just for the batteries themselves, but for the associated systems, procedures, and approval processes.

“We put a great deal of effort into ensuring the safety of these new alternative systems, but the cost of the present safety and approval methodology is cumbersome. This collaborative effort gives a chance for an even greater level of safety,” said Rasmus Nielsen, a naval architect and officer at project partner Scandlines.

STX France has revealed a concept design for a cruising sailing ship, Silenseas, that aims to reduce energy costs and environmental impact.

STX France has researched sail propulsion since 2009 and developed a patented concept, Solidsail, which makes it possible to reach sail areas of up to 1,200 square meters (12,900 square feet) safely. Arising from that, the company says it can offer the market a range of innovative vessels.

UAE based Enata Marine has launched a stylish superyacht with twin carbon fibre hydrofoils and a hybrid diesel electric propulsion system at the Dubai Boat Show.

The 9.6m long FOILER, also called ‘The Flying Yacht’ due to its ability to operate 1.5m above the water has two BMW 320hp diesel engines which gives it a take-off speed of 17 knots and a maximum speed of 40 knots. The engines are also able to cruise in full electric mode up to 10 knots to reduce fuel consumption by 20% over a traditional yacht.

Enata Marine explains that the diesel engines drive two generators which provide the electrical power. The power is then delivered to two electrical (ENATA) torpedoes that drive the boat.
