UASC has named the industry’s most eco-efficient container vessel at Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (HSHI), Mokpo South Korea

United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) named the industry’s most eco-efficient container vessel at Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (HSHI), Mokpo South Korea today. M.V. ‘Barzan’ is a part of the industry’s first LNG-ready ultra-large container vessel fleet.

With a loading capacity of 18,800TEU, the DNV GL classed vessel M.V. ‘Barzan’ is first in a new class of leading ultra-large container vessels that will be the largest in UASC’s fleet to date and will set new standards for fuel and energy efficiency, due to optimized vessel design and an array of propulsion and equipment efficiency technologies. Preliminary calculations indicate an EEDI (Energy Efficiency Design Index) value that is close to 50% below the 2025 limit set by IMO. UASC is working to establish a range of additional metrics and targets through which the efficiency of UASC’s vessels can be managed to drive further reduction in carbon emissions across all UASC vessels.

IIMS Certifying Authority training day looked at how to conduct inclining experiments and heel tests

On 13 May, a group of 20 IIMS members and non members, including IIMS MCA coding and non coding surveyors, gathered at Trafalgar Wharf, Portchester on a beautifully sunny day for one of the two annual training days that are provided by the Certifying Authority.

The theme of this Certifying Authority training day was stability, stability, stablity. The first class training, which was provided by IIMS CA Committee members, Fraser Noble (Chairman) and John Excell, included an inclining experiment followed by a heel test on a small fishing vessel and finally a heel test on a RIB.

The three exercises were filmed and the IIMS will soon be issuing these videos to members via its YouTube channel for all to see and learn from as a training aid.

Thanks go to all those who attended and helped to make the day both interesting and enjoyable.

The host city, with its rich maritime history, provided a fitting backdrop as a distinguished audience of superyacht owners and industry specialists took their seats at the Westergasfabriek.

The World Superyacht Awards ceremony, which celebrates excellence in superyacht build and design, is the most anticipated event in the superyacht calendar.

Rear Admiral Peter Brady, Director General of the Maritime Authority of Jamaica has been awarded the prestigious International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Themed Award for World Maritime Day 2015 “Maritime education and training”, sponsored by the China Classification Society, at the 27th Seatrade Awards Ceremony.

Admiral Brady was recognized for his dedicated work in the field of maritime training. He chaired the IMO Standards of Training and Watchkeeping (STW) Sub Committee for almost 10 years and was Chairman of the Committee of the Whole at the Diplomatic Conference in Manila, Philippines, which amended the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) Convention and STCW Code for Seafarers.

CRN, the shipyard based in Ancona specialising in the construction of steel and aluminium pleasure vessels between 50 and 90 metres in length, has held a private ceremony to launch its hull No 134 – a 55-metre megayacht named Atlante that stands out for her very strong, unmistakable personality.

This yacht is the outcome of the outstanding job performed by design firm Nuvolari Lenard, that pencilled her outer lines, and CRN’s Engineering Department, which was in charge of naval engineering.

New Panama Canal tolls structure has been approved and will start from 1 April 2016

The Cabinet Council of the Republic of Panama has officially approved a proposal to modify the Panama Canal tolls structure, following a recommendation from the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) Board of Directors. The accepted proposal, which modifies the pricing structure for most Canal segments, will better facilitate the Canal’s goal of providing outstanding service and reliability to the global shipping and maritime community while allowing the ACP to safeguard the competitiveness of the waterway.

Today’s passage follows more than a year of informal consultations with representatives from various industry segments, an open call for comments, and a public hearing to solicit industry feedback on these changes.

Nearly a year on from the loss of the Cheeki Rafiki in the Atlantic with the loss of her four crew, the MAIB has published its report into this distressing matter. The incident, which received massive UK media coverage at the time, sent shockwaves through the marine and yachting world.

Despite an extensive search that found the upturned hull of the Cheeki Rafiki, the four crew remain missing. The hull was not recovered and is assumed to have sunk. In the absence of survivors and material evidence, the causes of the accident remain a matter of some speculation. However, it is concluded that the Cheeki Rafiki capsized and inverted following a detachment of its keel.

Dutch superyacht builder, ICON Yachts, has recently announced the order by an experienced yachtsmen for the biggest new construction project in the shipyard’s history. Tim Heywood is responsible for the sleek and timeless lines of the project, which is due to be completed by Summer 2017.

Jen Wartena, CEO of ICON Yachts, said: “This project will be the largest yacht to date that ICON Yachts has built. We are excited to have been rewarded with the construction of this project with such fantastic pedigree.”

The powering for the 17kn top speed and long range efficiency will be realized with a state of the art diesel electric hybrid propulsion setup.

Princess Yachts has announced the latest addition to the Princess S Class range – the all new Princess S65. This exciting new model will be launched in the autumn and joins the S72 in this range of dynamic high-speed sportbridge yachts.

The S65 will benefit from a spacious interior which will feature a galley aft of the saloon, with separate dining area opposite. An electrically opening aft window will convert the galley into a cockpit bar creating a sociable cockpit area.

The potential liquefaction of bauxite cargoes has been the subject of a number industry bulletins in recent years. These concerns have been renewed following the recent sinking of the bulk carrier Bulk Jupiter, which was reportedly carrying 46,400 MT of bauxite loaded at Kuantan in Malaysia.

Writing in the April issue of the London P&I Club’s bulletin StopLoss, Dr Martin Jonas, Brookes Bell LLP, Liverpool, makes the following observations.

Similar to other unprocessed ores, such as iron ore fines and nickel ore, grades of bauxite that contain a high proportion of fines capable of retaining significant moisture are potentially at risk of liquefaction, resulting in cargo shift which may cause the capsizing of the carrying ship. AMSBC agrees amalgamation with IIMS to form IIMS Canada

The Association of Marine Surveyors of British Columbia (AMSBC) has agreed to amalgamate and form IIMS BC, the British Columbia chapter of IIMS Canada.
The Association of Marine Surveyors of British Columbia (AMSBC) has agreed to amalgamate and form IIMS BC, the British Columbia chapter of IIMS Canada.

At a recent meeting of the International Institute of Marine Surveying’s (IIMS) management board in Portchester UK, it was unanimously agreed to accept the proposal from the Association of Marine Surveyors of British Columbia (AMSBC) to amalgamate and form IIMS BC, the British Columbia chapter of IIMS Canada.

The realisation of IIMS BC and IIMS Canada is the result of much due diligence work behind the scenes. The formation of IIMS Canada brings the number of IIMS regional branches to six, the others being Australia, India, New Zealand, Pakistan and UAE.

Commenting on the news, Richard Smith, President of AMSBC said, “Looking to the future I am convinced that this will prove to be a very positive and beneficial move for both our members and the profession at large here in British Columbia.”
