Oceanco’s 106.7m Black Pearl won top honours at the 2019 Boat International Design & Innovation Awards that took place on the 27th of January in Cortina. This unique and complex vessel took home the award for “Best Naval Architecture for Sailing Yachts.”

Black Pearl, the largest sailing yacht in the world, is a veritable tour de force, incorporating high tech design, an updated state-of-the art DynaRig sailing system, single level engine room, a hybrid propulsion installation and high capacity battery bank allowing for a regeneration mode when under sail. Her hull design is created with a unique wave-piercing bow that is both aesthetically appealing and fuel-efficient. Austrian yard Silent Yachts has premiered 16.7-metre (55-foot) solar-powered catamaran Silent 55 at the Cannes Yachting Festival. Silent 55 uses silent electric propulsion for unlimited range with no noise or fumes and minimal vibration – she is completely self-sufficient and largely maintenance-free.

Available in several power configurations to suit a variety of cruising applications, all of which adhere to Silent Yachts’ philosophy of relying mainly on solar power for propulsion and on-board power needs.

The Silent 55 on display at Cannes is an E-Power version with 2 x 135kW motors and can reach up to 14 knots. The model can be equipped as a Cruiser version, with a pair of 30 kW motors or a Hybrid Power version with 2 x 220hp diesel engines and two 14 kW electric motors. A Sailor version can be equipped with all the previously mentioned drivetrain configurations and is rigged with a mast and sails to provide additional propulsion in fair winds.

Maritime Minister to open Seawork and give a key note address on women in the marine industry

Maritime Minister, Nusrat Ghani, the first Muslim woman to speak from the House of Commons despatch box, will make a keynote speech on a new initiative for women in the maritime sector at Seawork 2018.

The Parliamentary Under Secretary of State will also tour the show, meeting exhibitors and women in the commercial marine industry. The opening will take place at 1000 on the first day of Seawork (Tuesday 3 July) at the Golden Arrow Restaurant.

British Marine has cancelled the 2019 London Boat Show citing insufficient support, but what do exhibitors think happened and what impact will it have?

Following a year which saw the LBS reformatted from ten to five days and a tenth year of falling attendance figures, British Marine last month cancelled the 2019 show at ExCel London, claiming research showed ‘insufficient support from a large proportion of the marine industry’ for the show’s ‘current format, duration and location’. This, said BM, made the show commercially unviable.

British Marine, which organises and owns the London Boat Show, has announced that the 2019 Show, due to run at ExCeL London from 9-13 January 2019, will not take place.
British Marine, which organises and owns the London Boat Show, has announced that the 2019 Show, due to run at ExCeL London from 9-13 January 2019, will not take place.

British Marine, which organises and owns the London Boat Show, has announced that the 2019 Show, due to run at ExCeL London from 9-13 January 2019, will not take place.

This decision was made after independent research by exhibition experts, Zing Insights, showed there was insufficient support from a large proportion of the marine industry to the London Boat Show with its current format, duration and location.

In the last three weeks, Zing Insights has carried out personal interviews with over 67% of exhibitors. This revealed that whilst a number of marine companies supported the change to a five day Show, finding it preferable to a 10 day Show, a large number of key exhibitors were not prepared to commit to exhibiting to a five day Show at ExCeL in January 2019.

The summit, which took place between 28th February and 1st March 2018, led to local industry leaders and visitors almost unanimous in acknowledging the vast potential of the region to become a yachting destination and in stressing the improvements needed to realise this potential.

It was noted that to achieve its goals, massive on-going investment is required in infrastructure to allow for the development of the region. A new international trade show, the Marina High Tech show, has been announced for 2018, dedicated to new technology in yachting.

Marina High Tech is “a high-calibre showcase of nautical and sustainable innovation across the marine industry”, according to the organisers.

The first edition is set to take place at Marina Baie des Anges in Villeneuve-Loubet from 24 to 25 May 2018 with the support of Villeneuve-Loubet Council, CCI Riviera Ports, Nice Côte d’Azur council, the Regional Tourism Board and local stakeholders in the PACA region.
