IIMS Western Med Certifying Authority and Small Craft Working Group training days

Details have been announced for the next IIMS Western Med training event (28-29 April), which will take place in Palma, Majorca at the same time as the Palma Superyacht Show.

The event will take place over two days and follows a different theme to past events as it incorporates some Certifying Authority and tonnage education mixed with some small craft surveyor training.

Day One (Thursday 28 April) will be of interest to IIMS Certifying Authority members and any members wanting to become accredited to do tonnages. John Excell, IIMS Chairman of Small Craft Surveying and a member of the Certifying Authority committee, will lead the proceedings and training.

Problems with skin fittings

Surveyors should be aware of the issues caused by faulty skin fittings
Surveyors should be aware of the issues caused by faulty skin fittings

In the last month I have come across two situations which highlight the potential problems with skin fittings, reports Eugene Curry. One vessel, a GRP sea angling charter boat, was a licenced Passenger Boat (12 passengers and 2 crew) permitted to operate up to 40 nautical miles offshore. The other vessel was an aluminium hulled yacht undergoing inspection for renewal of its passenger Boat Licence and permitted to operate up to 30 nautical miles offshore. In both instances the owners grumbled about the additional expense involved but changed their tune when problems were found.

IIMS Certifying Authority training day looked at how to conduct inclining experiments and heel tests

On 13 May, a group of 20 IIMS members and non members, including IIMS MCA coding and non coding surveyors, gathered at Trafalgar Wharf, Portchester on a beautifully sunny day for one of the two annual training days that are provided by the Certifying Authority.

The theme of this Certifying Authority training day was stability, stability, stablity. The first class training, which was provided by IIMS CA Committee members, Fraser Noble (Chairman) and John Excell, included an inclining experiment followed by a heel test on a small fishing vessel and finally a heel test on a RIB.

The three exercises were filmed and the IIMS will soon be issuing these videos to members via its YouTube channel for all to see and learn from as a training aid.

Thanks go to all those who attended and helped to make the day both interesting and enjoyable.

IIMS HQ team changes

hqlogo-300x269There are a couple of important changes to report at the IIMS head office.

Those members who are involved with the Certifying Authority work that the IIMS does will be very familiar with Carol Allen, who is our current Certifying Authority Administrator. Sadly after a period of 18 months, Carol has decided to leave for pastures new, but not in the marine field.

During her time with the IIMS, Carol has made significant strides in her area of operation and leaves the CA systems and procedures in a better place. We shall miss Carol, who leaves the business on Friday 27 February.

More than 20 marine surveyors attended the IIMS Certifying Authority training day, held at Portchester Sailing Club on Wednesday 1 October. Participants came from as far afield as France, Spain, Holland and even India.

The day was presented as a workshop with John Excell, John Heath and Fraser Noble (Chairman of the IIMS Certifying Authority) leading the delivery and handling the resulting debate and comments.

The day proved to be long and exhausting, but productive as delegates got their heads around some of the more complex matters relating to the MCA directives and requirements.

Twenty plus marine surveyors who are IIMS Certifying Authority examiners met for their twice yearly training day at Portchester Sailing Club in mid May.

With the many changes now in place as a result of the implementation of the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (MLC 2006) legislation, it was an opportunity to review the procedures and to learn more about the convention.

Mark Towl from the Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) was the key presenter in the morning session. During his presentation he stressed that the MCA is still reviewing many aspects of MLC 2006 and further changes were inevitable. He also stressed that, in his view, the MCA have taken the most liberal view to how MLC 2006 is being interpreted.
