Unit 17. Electrical & Electronic Engineering Surveying

The purpose of this two part module is to give the learner a basic grounding in electrical theory and practice to cover the equipment found on vessels. students of Marine Surveying a basic knowledge of Electrical and Electronic Systems Surveys on ships. The overall intention of the module is not to produce electrical or electronic engineers, but to give a Surveyor the theoretical and practical knowledge to enable them to make an assessment of what they are surveying. The module shows some different types of systems including photographs and drawings to illustrate certain points and there are also rule references.

The subjects covered include the following:
• Electrical Safety • Electrical Power • Batteries • Generation of Electricity • Conversion of voltage and frequency (AC to DC and Vice Versa) • Power Distribution
• Electrical Protection • Corrosion prevention

This is a very wide subject and it cannot be totally covered within one module such as this so it is suggested that some of the books and resources mentioned within the module are investigated further by the student.

Unit 17 Part II
After completion of this module students should be able to:
• Identify systems using electronics • Understand the components of the systems • Know how to break down systems into manageable parts • Understand the basics of fault finding • Know how to work safely with electronics and be aware of correct procedures for testing.
