Guidelines for developing and implementing an SMS for Ammonia-Fuelled Ships

The Nautical Institute is proud to support the Maritime Technologies Forum’s (MTF) initiative in developing the Guidelines for Developing and Implementing a Safety Management System for Ammonia-Fuelled Ships. This document is a critical first step in addressing safety gaps associated with the use of ammonia as a marine fuel, providing industry stakeholders with a structured approach to integrating safety measures within their Safety Management Systems (SMS).

As the maritime industry transitions toward alternative fuels, safety remains a paramount concern. Ammonia, while a promising zero-carbon fuel, presents unique operational challenges that must be managed effectively. The MTF guidelines serve as an essential resource for shipping companies, enabling them to develop or enhance existing SMS frameworks to ensure the safe application of ammonia as fuel on board Amonia-fuelled ships.

The methodology used in these guidelines aligns with the ISM Code’s Part A, identifying relevant safety considerations and incorporating insights from industry stakeholders to create a robust and practical tool. The Nautical Institute’s said, “[Our] endorsement of this effort reflects our unwavering commitment to operational safety and maritime best practices. As an independent and authoritative voice in the industry, we have consistently championed seafarers’ training, professional development, and maritime safety. Our leadership in this field has earned us the respect of major global stakeholders, including Flag and classification bodies, the MTF, and the UNGC MJTTF.

By actively engaging in this initiative, we continue to shape policy, provide real-world expertise, and drive safety improvements that directly benefit serving mariners. “Our support for these guidelines is part of a broader effort to ensure that alternative fuels are adopted safely and responsibly. Even before COP26 in 2021, The Nautical Institute has been advocating for safe maritime decarbonization, emphasising the need for practical and effective safety measures.

This initiative is not just about influencing the industry, it is about making tangible, lasting changes that will define the future of maritime fuel safety. “By endorsing these guidelines, we reaffirm our role as a leading advocate for seafarers and maritime safety, ensuring that the industry transitions toward alternative fuels without compromising the safety and well-being of seafarers.”
