Shipping is a complex international business and many different parties, often based in different countries, may have a commercial interest in a single vessel.
The chart in the full document illustrates four of many ways that the UK shipping fleet might be presented, in each case looking at the deadweight tonnage (dwt – a measure of cargo carrying capacity) of the vessels concerned.
By all four measures – registered, direct owned, parent owned and managed – the UK shipping fleet experienced substantial growth between the late 1990s and 2008/09, when the industry started to feel the impact of the global recession.

There is a brand new Recreational Craft Directive (RCD) applicable from the 18th January 2016.
After this date the old Recreational Craft Directive 94/25/EC (which was amended to become 2003/44/EC) will be repealed. There is a further one year transitional period whereby certificates to both Directives will be accepted (until 18th January 2017) and there is also an extra period (till 18th January 2020) for small and medium sized enterprises to comply with stage 1.

On the 28-29 January, Cordstrap, the global leader in the protection of cargo in transit, hosted a two day seminar which focused on sharing knowledge and experience of one-way cargo securing systems.
The gathering was held at the Cordstrap Training Center in Oostrum, The Netherlands, with an audience of 21 British and Italian marine surveyors, cargo supervisors and port managers, some of whom are IIMS members. The focus was safety; the most important common concern of all parties present.
This skilled and experienced audience take the responsibility of protecting their personnel, colleagues in the logistics chain – and beyond that their cargo itself and the environment – very seriously.

According to The Swedish Club, half of the costs of hull and machinery claims handled by the Club have arisen due to navigational claims such as collisions, contacts or groundings – a figure that has remained steady over recent years despite improved technology and the widespread implementation of Safety Management Systems.
The Swedish Club, in its latest Loss Prevention publication, Navigational Claims, has revealed a number of interesting findings relating to claims made for hull and machinery damage between 2004–2013.

International Institute Of Marine Surveying, India Branch, is organising a members seminar and meet on 13th March 2015.
The venue of the seminar is the Killachand Hall, Indian Merchants Chamber Beside Churchgate Station, Mumbai. The meeting is being held from 1400 hrs to 1600 hrs and is FREE to attend.
