DP World London Gateway Port has welcomed one of the world’s largest container ships carrying a record 18,601 TEU (Twenty Foot Equivalent Units). The UASC owned Al Muraykh chose to call at DP World London Gateway to unload 3,800 containers.

The ship is one of the largest in the world measuring 400 metres in length. The containers are loaded 11 storeys high above deck and 23 containers across the ship. With thousands more stowed below deck, the ship can carry up to 18,800 containers. MCA issues Hovercraft Code Marine Guidance Note

The UK MCA has released a Marine Guidance Note to introduce the Hovercraft Code

UK MCA has issued a Marine Guidance Note to introduce the new Hovercraft Code which has been developed for Light and Small hovercraft operating in the United Kingdom or United Kingdom Waters (both at sea and on inland waterways).

Currently all hovercraft used for reward must be built to the requirements of the High Speed Craft (HSC) Code. The Hovercraft Code introduces a voluntary set of standards appropriate for small commercial hovercraft, which are equivalent to the HSC requirements.

Where a hovercraft is surveyed and certificated under, and continues to comply with, this Code, it is exempted from those parts of the Hovercraft (General) Order 1972 and the Merchant Shipping (High Speed Craft) Regulations 2004 which require the hovercraft to be surveyed and certificated against the British Hovercraft Safety Requirements (BHSR) and the IMO High Speed Craft Code. The General Exemption is annexed to this MGN.

CASCADe project to improve bridge efficiency and prevent accidents ends

An EU funded project that has been funded for three years called CASCADe is coming to a close this month. The project has developed new methodologies in which information is shared and displayed on a ship’s bridge, helping to improve efficiency on board and contribute towards the prevention of accidents at sea.

Drawing directly from the experience of seafarers, the CASCADe project has developed a new adaptive bridge design methodology that treats both human agents and electronic equipment as parts of a cooperative system. This allows for the sharing of information to be optimised.

Richard Greiner of Moore Stephens predicts a tough year ahead for shipping in 2016

Richard Greiner, shipping partner at Moore Stephens, an international accountant and shipping firm, paints a gloomy outlook for the shipping market in 2016. He writes:

The ultimate definition of an optimist has been characterised as an accordion player with an answerphone. Such extreme optimism might be difficult to find in shipping today, but the portents for 2016 are not all bad.

The Baltic Dry Index, a measure of shipping rates for everything from pins to elephants, dropped to an all-time low in December last year, and has fallen still further this month. Most people blamed this on China for not consuming as much of anything as it did previously. Nevertheless, the dry bulk sector will probably have to reduce the newbuilding orderbook and increase ship recycling in 2016 in order to restore the balance.
