At the end of last year, despite Covid, IIMS managed to run its first in-person 7 day practical residential course for those studying for the Institute’s Yacht & Small Craft professional qualification, although the course is open to anyone wanting to get practical boatbuilding experience. Six students participated and all successfully passed the module.
Working in conjunction with the Lyme Regis Boat Building Academy, based on the UK south coast, we have put together an intensive 7-day programme to be held at their facilities using their expert tutors and purpose-built facilities.
This practical module runs just once a year and spaces are strictly limited. Only up to 12 students can be accommodated annually on each course.
The residential course is scheduled to take place from Sunday 12 December at 12.00 noon until 16.30 until Saturday 18 December 2021. Quality self-catering accommodation will be booked locally in the town by IIMS and is included in the cost.
The cost for the 7 day programme to include accommodation is £1,300 (no VAT). Your food and travel are at your own expense. Payment terms are 50% on confirming your reservation with the balance due 30 days before the programme start date. We understand that Covid could impact on travel from overseas nearer the time, so with this in mind if you book a place and subsequently cannot travel due to Covid, your deposit or payment in full will be refunded to you.

Wooden boatbuilding methods – traditional and modern
· Clinker and carvel
· Glued clinker/clinker ply, glued carvel, cold moulding, strip-planking/sheathing, strip-planking/moulding and stitch and tape
· Approaches to set-up and building
Standards in construction (Lloyds and Seafish)
Terminology, specific terms particular to wooden boats
Practical activities in the FRP workshop
· Demonstration by instructor
· Application of gelcoats
· Wet hand layup, resin and reinforcement
· Applying gelcoat to tiles as per instructor demonstration
Faults in FRP
· Faults that occur during layup (thin gel, under cure, exotherm, dry spots and voids etc.)
· Faults from handling (gel coat cracks and star crazing, gel scratches)
· Damage that occurs during use (impact damage, crush, penetration, delamination of structural elements, stress cracks, compression around fittings etc.)
· Saturated cores
· Osmosis (cause, indicators and repair of)
