Unit 27. Surveying Inland Waterway Narrowboats

£395.00

The marine surveying of inland waterway vessels is a hands-on profession undertaken by people in overalls and safety shoes. Many aspects require a certain degree of formal training, personal experience and the application of an amount of common sense, all of which are vital aspects of a good surveyor. Consequently, the Module is written with the bias towards practical application as opposed to strict scientific interpretation because that is how a survey is conducted. It would be wonderful to precisely define the corrosion products discovered at the bottom of a pit to ascertain the origin or to rig the engine up to an assortment of test equipment to precisely detail its condition but that would be too costly for all but the most detailed of surveys. Instead, judgement is made based upon reasonable investigation techniques that fall within the expectations and the budget of the client.

Completion of this Module will give the student an understanding of the breadth and depth of a typical pre-purchase survey on steel narrowboats. However, it is not a complete guide but an aid as the unexpected should be expected with an open mind at all times. Opinions on some subjects vary, sometimes being extremely polarised, but in general, within this Module, one opinion only is given. However, you may find with experience, that you form a differing opinion which you feel is acceptable.

The Module has pointers to suggested research, background reading and training courses and especially, suggests that you complete the CRT Boat Safety Scheme Examiner course.
